june 16 – update

Today has been such a fun day! As you know, Kent’s first dose of his new medicine went really well last night. He had another one this morning, and by the time I got to the hospital, he was grinning from ear to ear. He said, “Listen!” He breathed in and out real big and then said, “Nothing!” It was true – no “Darth Vadar” sounds! He had another one this afternoon with the same results. It takes about 20 minutes after the treatment before its effects are felt. Then he can breathe easily for about two and a half hours. It is truly a miracle. He walked the halls twice (a feat), had visitors that he could actually talk to, and played “Rummicube” (a table game) with Kami, my sister Janet, and me. We laughed and joked, and couldn’t believe we were doing it. This medicine seems to be able to control the huge amount of secretions to a remarkable extent. It does not defeat the disease, but it does help greatly with the worst complication to the disease, and will enable Kent to have much more quality of life. He will remain in the hospital until tomorrow, at least, so that the dr and pharmasist can determine what dosage he needs to have the best result.

Prayer requests:

1. That the pharmasist at the hospital can locate an adequate supply.

2. That the pharmasist and respiratory therapists can figure out how to send Kent home with it to use in our nebulizer . It comes in a powder form that has to be liquified before the nebulizer can make it into mist and send it into his lungs. Is this something I can do at home, or will we have to return to the hospital for treatments? We hope, of course, to be able to do it at home.

3. That the insurance company would pay, or that the pharmaceutical company that makes it would take us on an a test case. The ins. co is saying that the FDA hasn’t approved this drug for this disease, so they are denying it. Of course, Polychondritis is so rare that NO drug is approved for it! The hospital is trying to get a letter from our dr., as well as hospital records, to try to convince the ins. co. to pay for it. (It is approximately $500.00 a dose, and Kent is taking  three doses a day.) The pharmaceutical company has not responded yet to my knowledge.

Rejoice with us that something has been found that helps Kent’s ability to breathe, and please continue to join with us in prayer as we face this next hurdle. This journey has been so full of extreme highs and lows that I feel like I am reeling. Every day is different than I expect it to be, and I am so grateful that this fun one was thrown into the mix. God is good.

In Him, Davidene

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:19 (NLT)

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you (Mt 6:33)

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; (2 Cor 9:8)

Just a couple promises to claim during this time of need.

Once again coming to the throne with praise and continued prayers. May God be glorified as HE continues to open the doors for these treatments. I know God has a special plan for both of you as you travel this unexpected bend in the road. God is amazing! We will have to get together and share our God stories one day.
Blessings on this day as the dosage is determined. May you be in your own home soon.

  9. Grateful for this progress. “You are good, and what You do is good.” Ps. 119:68 (a favorite verse of our youth pastor.)
