June 3rd – update

Well, this has been another miraculously good day. After Kent’s unexpected ease with breathing on his own, the dr. decided to take out the ventilator today. This is so much earlier than anyone dreamed this could happen. He struggled all day today to cough up fluid from his lungs, and was exhausted beyond words with the effort, but was still being successful as of tonight. He could speak again (what a relief to those of us trying to decipher his writing!), laugh, and have jello, chicken broth, and Sprite for dinner (to which he said, “What a feast!”). He is positive, upbeat, and highly motivated to keep breathing on his own. Please pray for success with that. Pray specifically that the fluids would decrease, would not be thick and difficult to cough up, and that Kent would retain strength for the task. Also, pray that he could sleep. It is hard to sleep when you are coughing deeply every few seconds. Who would have thought that the act of breathing could be such a difficult, all-consuming activity? The sign at Johns Hopkins read, “When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.” While that over-simplifies the truth, it still resonates with us this week.

We were delighted this afternoon when a very special friend braved the “no visitors” sign to sit in the corner with his guitar, singing hymns such as “Amazing Grace” and “It is Well With My Soul” to us. It was our private worship and soul refreshing time, sent by the grace of God. On this first day that Kent was off of sedation, we were able to hold hands (with Kent knowing we were doing it), close our eyes, and bask in God’s goodness in quiet worship. I will never forget it. It was interesting that the struggle to breathe and cough quieted during this time. God doesn’t miss a detail.

One note to local friends: Although Kent is on the “improving” list, he is still fighting the battle of his life and he is exhausted. As much as we would love to open the doors to see friends, and to know the encouragement of their presence, the dr. still says “No Visitors”. He just can’t take too much stimulation yet. Kent reminded me to ask you to continue to go to the throne in his behalf, instead of going to the hospital. We will rejoice when we can invite everyone in! If he keeps this up, it won’t be too long.

Love, Davidene

We are so excited to read the wonderfully encouraging news about Kent!! We are continuing to pray – I have been specifically praying for the peace of God that transcends all understanding (Phil 4:6 & 7) As I read your post about the friend who was able to lead you guys in worship I had this wonderful picture of your family presenting your requests to the Lord but always with thanksgiving for who He is just as the scripture instructs us to. God is good and your walk with the Lord is a beautiful testimony to us and to many others. We love you and are praying for you.

  7. Barbara Buchholtz says:

I continue to lift Kent and the family up in prayer as does my church.

Davidene, your blog is so helpful in leading us in the right direction for specific prayers. I have a little saying when things get difficult, “if He leads you to it, He will lead you through it”

    Pray, Praise and give Thanks……..

Thank you for the updates Davidene. What a thrill to know that God is in the midst of every circumstance and that Kent is progressing and relishing in every breath of life. God is certainly answering our prayers. We will continue to pray for Kent. Know that you and Kent are loved.

  9. Kasha says:

Our God is a MIGHTY God, and what rejoicing we are doing right now with this “good” news. Both of you have been heavy on our hearts and minds, and in our prayers frequently. You will continue to be as we know this fight is not over. May God be glorified before all men, may Kent continue to have the peace and knowledge that his best is His desire, and we will continue to pray specifically for all you have outlined, Davidene. Blessings and love to you all.
